ABOUT IMPACT

IMPACT is a large, international, multi-institutional collaborative mummy database, centred on a ORS Visual Web Pro internet-based mini-PACS (picture archiving and communication system). Initially focused on Egyptian mummies, it has been established to undertake large-scale radiological examinations of variability in patterns of health and disease and of mummification practices within and between time periods.

Despite a long history of study, mummy research has primarily focused on case-by-case examinations of individual mummies, making it difficult to identify patterns in mummification traditions. The PACS, developed in a clinical context, permits the efficient web-based transfer of digital radiological studies to a central facility designed to receive, store, and share this information worldwide.
